Remembered No More

There is a particular hour, usually somewhere past midnight, when one old thing surfaces on its own schedule. Nobody else knows about it, or maybe one person does, and even that feels like too many. It picks the moment you are most tired and least defended to replay itself in full detail, as if it happened yesterday instead of years ago.

God's promise to His people is not that He simply has a short memory. “I will be merciful to their unrighteousness,” He says. “I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.” This is not forgetfulness. It is a decision, an act of will, not a limitation of mind. God is not surprised by the old file resurfacing at 3 a.m. He already knew it in full before He made the promise, and He chose not to hold it as evidence anyway.

That is worth sitting with. The thing replaying itself in your head tonight is not new information God stumbled across. It has already been considered, and already been set aside, by the only judge whose verdict actually counts.

The file was not lost. It was closed, and the prophet Micah pictures it thrown into the depths of the sea, gone from where anyone, including you, can dredge it back up as evidence against you.
