Not By Works

For a season, a new baby was the whole world, and every routine that used to hold your walk with God quietly fell away. Morning quiet time. The verse you used to read on the train. Two weeks became six. And somewhere in there, a familiar dread crept in, the sense that you were falling behind on payments toward something, and that God's patience with the arrears had to be running thin.

Paul writes to people who needed to hear this before they needed anything else. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.” Notice the tense. Have been saved. Already complete, not an ongoing installment plan you keep servicing with disciplines that lapse the moment life gets hard.

If it depended even partly on our output, Paul says, someone would have grounds to boast, and someone else grounds to despair. Grace removes both. It is not a discount on a bill we still owe. It is a gift already given, with the receipt already marked paid, long before you missed a single quiet time.

The six weeks you missed did not unmake anything. The gift was never running on your delivery schedule.
