New Every Morning

There is a particular kind of morning where you are tired before your feet touch the floor. Maybe it followed a loss. Maybe it is just the bone-deep weariness of a year that has taken more than it gave back. Either way, the day announces itself as a rerun of yesterday's defeat before it has even started.

This verse sits in the middle of the hardest chapter Lamentations has to offer, written by a man numb with grief over a city in ruins. It is not the opening line of an easy book. It is the pivot point in a devastating one, the moment the writer catches himself remembering something true in the middle of everything that is not okay. “It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning.”

New every morning does not mean yesterday's mercy stretched thin enough to cover today. It means a fresh supply, matched to today's actual need, issued again this morning whether or not you feel ready to receive it.

Your hard morning does not disqualify you from that mercy. It was never rationed according to your capacity in the first place, only sustained by a compassion that Lamentations insists, even from the middle of genuine ruin, does not fail.
