Held Forever

There are nights when the real question underneath everything isn't whether God exists. It's whether He still wants us. We replay the day: the impatience, the corner we cut, the prayer we meant to pray and never got to. And a quieter, harsher voice asks if we've finally used up His patience.

Jesus doesn't meet that fear with a pep talk about trying harder. He meets it by telling us whose hand we are actually in. “I give eternal life to them,” He says of His sheep. “They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Then, as if one grip weren't enough, He names a second: the Father's hand, closed around the Son's hand, closed around us. Two hands. Neither one loosening.

Notice what is doing the holding. Not our memorized verses. Not our streak of good mornings with an open Bible. Not the version of us that shows up on our best day. The grip belongs to Christ, and Scripture describes it in a strength that has nothing to do with our own. We did not earn this hand, and our worst day cannot pry it open.

So when the accusation comes, and it will, that we have finally done too much wrong to be kept, we can answer it with this verse before we answer it with our own track record. Our record was never what was holding us. His hand was.
